TOP TIPS FOR WEDDING DRESS SHOPPING PART 3

FORGET ABOUT WEDDING DRESS SIZING – UNLESS YOU ARE BUYING WITHOUT TRYING

First things first – wedding dress sizing is all over the place and generally also very small. I wouldn’t recommend buying a dress without trying it first unless it’s an absolute bargain and you don’t mind losing the money.

If you are going into a shop, it’s their job to know how the sizing works and to pick out the dresses that will work for you. Don’t be alarmed if they pick out a dress with a number that seems way too large, it may well fit at least a couple of sizes small – and it’s really easy to make a dress smaller (we’ve taken up to 4 sizes out of a dress in the past) but it’s quite difficult to make it bigger.

Ultimately, the dress will be made you-size.

BUT BE REALISTIC ABOUT YOUR SIZE

Yes, the dress will ultimately be fitted to you. But when you go into a shop, they need to know your size in order to work out where to start with the dresses they show you. There is no point saying that you are smaller than you actually are – all that will happen is that the first few dresses won’t fit and you’ll have to go up sizes, which can be embarrassing and awkward for both you and the person helping you. Most of us have seen brides in all shapes and sizes over the years anyway, there’s no need to be embarrassed!

THINK ABOUT THE TIME OF YEAR AND YOUR ENTERTAINMENT PLANS

I am well known for saying that you should have the dress that you want, not the dress that matches your theme or the one that you think other people would think you should have.

One major exception to this is to think about what the weather / temperature is going to be like. Whilst you may be prepared to suffer the cold in a very thin dress, or the heat in a large ballgown, it could make large parts of the day miserable for you, and that’s not how you want to remember it.

It’s also worth considering what you are hoping to do in the evening – a tight fishtail dress may look amazing on you, but if you want to dance the night away at a kaylee then it might cramp your style!

TRY SITTING DOWN!

Not long ago I had a bride come to me to buy a replacement for a dress that was just too tight. She has asked if should could sit down in it at the original shop and been told no! You should always try and sit down in any dress, and especially in a tighter fitting dress – it’s going to put a downer on your wedding breakfast if you can’t sit down to eat it!
